The Institute will conduct research, training and study programs that focus on six clusters of issues:
- Law, ethics and human rights;
- Conflict resolution and post-conflict areas;
- Mediation and negotiation theory and practice;
- Human Security and peace;
- Promotion of a culture of peace;
- Gender and Peace Building.
The Institutes work program will include two main areas:
The Research Unit will be concerned with developing an up-to-date database of international peace studies, academic research and documents. In addition, it will publish scientific bulletins and research papers in the field as well as develop teaching/training materials. The research unit will also be responsible for the academic supervision of the Suzanne Mubarak fellows during their stay in Egypt, and will seek to organize, with international bodies, opportunities for training of Egyptians and others from the region abroad.
The basic function of the Peace Studies Institute research arm will involve executing some short and long term studies on the issues covered by the six clusters. It will welcome visiting scholars who will participate in the teaching and research for periods varying from a week to six months. The teaching will be academically oriented, as differentiated from the Training Unit, which will focus more on skill building, awareness-raising, and networking. Initially, no formal degree granting will be envisaged, only the gradual buildup of coherent programs in each of the six areas. Many of the students will be drawn from Egypt and the region, and some graduate students from the University of Alexandria may undertake some of their academic work in the institute in agreement with their supervisors.
The Training Unit will work with the SMWIPM to develop appropriate training materials that SMWIPM will want to use in its training programs. The BA will also provide the use of its excellent facilitates and infrastructure to accommodate such training. As such, the SMWIPM and the BA Institute for Peace Studies will seek to mobilize other national, regional and international institutions to develop and conduct training sessions/ programs aimed at young and mid-career, gender-balanced leaders who will eventually build a network of like-minded agents of change, and promote the culture of peace in Egypt, the region and the world.
