The institute was born from the need to address, in depth, the conflicts and tensions that have plagued countries of the region for so long: a situation that has deprived its people from the stability that is necessary for sustainable development. Egypt's experience in brokering peace constitutes a rich source for the IPS to draw from in conducting its academic research and training program. Indeed, using this experience makes the work of IPS particularly relevant to the promotion of peaceful co-existence among nations, groups and individuals.
The IPS's core activity is to provide expert training in non-violent conflict management, resolution and peace building. Through its holistic and multidisciplinary approach to teaching and research, the institute aims at stimulating intellectual curiosity and increasing people’s ability to understand and support peace processes and policy making as well as enhance individuals’ capacity to foster dialogue and reconciliation.
Within the research and training programs of the institute, special emphasis will be laid on establishing competence in international law and ethics, and expanding research on the broad concept of security which encompasses topics such as human security, gender security and the inevitable link between peace and social, political and gender equity.
